Upcoming McLaren Hypercar Gets Speedy Name

McLaren Automotive Ltd.’s new hypercar will be called the Speedtail.
The British carmaker says the vehicle, previously known by the codename “BP23,” will be the fastest McLaren ever. That title currently belongs to the 1990s-era F1 supercar that topped out at 243 mph.
McLaren says the Speedtail also will be the most luxurious model in the marque’s history. The car’s name alludes to the vehicle’s “highly streamlined design,” according to the carmaker.
The Speedtail is the third car in McLaren’s top-tier Ultimate Series, following the P1 and the recently launched Senna. Power will come from an unspecified hybrid-electric drivetrain.
Like the F1, the new model will sport a three-seat layout with the driver sitting in the center ahead of an offset second row. McLaren says it resurrected the design following a customer request.
McLaren plans to unveil the vehicle in October. A teaser video can be viewed here.
Production, which will be limited to 106 units, is due to start in late 2019. All of the vehicles were pre-purchased at £1.6 million ($2.1 million) each—before the program was officially announced in November 2016.
