Volvo Car Corp. may add SUV/crossover models that are larger—and smaller—than the ones it sells now, CEO Hakkan Samuelsson tells Auto Express.

Hinting about future “surprises,” he notes that such additions would help Volvo reach its longstanding goal of generating 800,000 sales per year by early next decade. Volvo sold 340,800 vehicles in the first half of 2019.

A larger model already is in development, according to Sweden’s Teknikens Varld. Tentatively called the XC100, the vehicle is said to be five inches longer and an inch taller than today’s range-topping XC90 SUV (right). The enthusiast magazine says sales could start by 2022.

On the other end, a sub-XC40 crossover has been rumored for years. Auto Express points out that Volvo likely would partner with parent Zhejiang Geely Holding Group on the vehicle’s architecture and technology, including an electric variant.

Volvo has said that each new model it introduces from 2020 will be equipped with a hybrid or all-electric powertrain, with half of its sales expected to be all-electrics by 2025. The company’s first such offering due next year, will be a battery-powered version of its XC40 small crossover vehicle.
