Volkswagen Group and Amazon Web Services have launched a multi-year partnership to link data from 122 VW facilities worldwide through a single cloud-based database.
Creating the Volkswagen Industrial Cloud will yield “considerable” productivity gains and a “profound” impact on its manufacturing and logistics processes, according to the partners.
The open platform’s goal is to integrate companies throughout its value chain, including its network of more than 1,500 suppliers at 30,000 locations. VW says it is in negotiations now with several large companies about migrating to the new cloud platform.
VW’s immediate focus will be to establish standardized IT processes across all its group facilities.
The company will configure its production platform using Amazon tools and services developed for the manufacturing environment. The resulting platform will enable efficient data transfer from plants and subsidiaries that “dock” their system architectures to it, VW says.
