Hella Doubles up on Mild-Hybrid Tech

One of the products features a dual-voltage management system that enables a single lithium-ion battery to provide both 12- and 48-volt output as needed. The integrated unit, which includes a DC-DC converter, can fit in the same space as a conventional 12-volt lead-acid battery, according to the supplier.
This allows the system to be packaged into existing vehicle structures. Hella says the dual-voltage system is designed for compact to midsize vehicles.
The second new product, dubbed the PowerPack, teams a 48-volt lithium-ion battery with a DC-DC converter and battery management system. Hella says the package will can turn off the engine during highway coasting and reclaim energy through regenerative braking. The 48-volt battery also can power such auxiliary functions as ambient lighting, climate control and active chassis systems.
The new 48-volt systems can cut carbon dioxide emissions by as much as six grams per km, according to the company. By 2021, manufacturers in Europe must average no more than 95 g/ km of CO2 emissions from the passenger vehicles they make, down from the current fleet target of 120 g/km.
