Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says the plug-in hybrid version of its 2017 model Chrysler Pacifica minivan has a U.S. fuel economy rating of 32 mpg in hybrid mode and the equivalent of 84 mpg under all-electric power.

The $42,000 hybrid, which FCA touts as the U.S. market’s most efficient minivan, will go on sale later this month. The vehicle will be able to travel about 33 miles in electric-only mode and has an overall range of 566 miles.

The company attributes the hybrid’s efficiency to its “eFlite” dual-motor electrically variable transmission. The front-drive minivan fits a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery under the second-row floor, which preserves cargo space and the ability to retain FCA’s signature Stow ‘n Go third-row seats.

FCA says the propulsion battery can be fully recharged in 14 hours with standard household current. The process drops to about two hours with a 240-volt system.

The powertrain’s primary power source is a 3.6-liter V-6 gasoline engine modified to use the Atkinson combustion cycle for improved efficiency. A dual-purpose generator also can deliver torque to the front wheels through a one-way clutch under certain driving conditions.
