Volvo Car Corp.’s Polestar electric vehicle unit is opening a research and development center in Coventry, England.
Located near parent Geely Automobile Holding Co.’s U.K. design center, the new facility will coordinate with Polestar and Volvo’s main r&d center in Sweden. About 60 Polestar engineers will be employed at the Coventry center.

The facility will focus on developing electric vehicle technologies and lightweight material systems. This includes working on the upcoming Polestar 3 electric crossover, which is due in late 2021, and other future models.
The company’s first model, the Polestar 1 hybrid coupe, debuts this summer. This will be followed in 2020 by the all-electric Polestar 2 compact sedan (pictured), which was unveiled at the Geneva auto show in February.
