Robert Bosch GmbH plans to begin producing a 48-volt lithium-ion battery late next year for mild-hybrid applications in China, Europe and Japan.
Without identifying any customers, Bosch says it has secured a “considerable number” of production projects for the technology and is in talks with dozens of companies about future applications. Like other mild-hybrid systems, Bosch’s 48-volt technology can be added to an existing powertrain with almost no modification, while providing substantial fuel efficiency gains.
Bosch estimates there will be 15 million 48-volt hybrid vehicles on the road by 2025. This matches other forecasts that predict as many as 55% of new cars sold in Europe by 2025 will be equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid systems.
Bosch says it battery also is more cost effective because it doesn’t require active cooling and is housed in plastic rather than metal. The supplier reconfigured the battery pack’s cell design to ensure the plastic housing could withstand the pressure caused by the internal expansion that typically occurs during recharging.
