Brazilian startup company Sigma Lithium Resources Group says it is in talks with BMW, Tesla and Volkswagen about supplying lithium for electric vehicle batteries.
In June, Sigma was granted a six-year license by local authorities to mine hard rock lithium in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The company plans to build a mining facility in the region that will have initial annual capacity to produce 220,000 tonnes of lithium, according to Reuters.
Carmakers are looking to expand their supply sources for batteries and related raw materials as demand for EVs ramps up. Sigma CEO Calvyn Gardner says the company previously met with China’s Ganfeng Lithium to become a sub-contractor of the material but now aims to sell the pricey material directly to carmakers.
