Daimler introduced car2go in Europe in 2008 and expanded into North America a year later. The service now is available in 11 cities in the U.S. and Canada.
About 185,000 new members have joined car2go in North America this year. Use of the service in the region is up 33% year-over-year through November, according to the company. Toronto is car2go’s largest market, while New York, Vancouver and Calgary are the fastest growing in North America.
To date, car2go members in North America have taken 40 million trips spanning more than 172,000 miles. Members have access to a fleet of 6,000 Mercedes-Benz CLA and GLA compact cars and Smart ForTwo city vehicles.
Customers pay for vehicles by the minute for actual use and can rent a car at discounted rates by the hour or day. The fee includes insurance, parking, fuel and maintenance.
Car2go claims to be the largest car-sharing business in the world. Its customer base grew 43% last year to 2.2 million users worldwide.
