San Jose, Calif.-based Cepton Technologies Inc. says it has signed a deal to package its lidar technology into the lighting modules made by Japan’s Koito Manufacturing Co. and market the system to autonomous vehicle programs.

Formed in mid-2016, Cepton says its patented micro-motion lidar is smaller and better performing than competitive systems. The technology can detect and map objects as far away as 300 m (984 ft).

Koito claims to supply 20% of the global headlight market, including 60% of those used by Japanese carmakers. The supplier is in the process of testing the functionality, performance and reliability of Cepton’s lidar integrated into its headlights and taillights.
