Powered by a revised version of FCA’s 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine, the new Ram 1500 generates 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. That’s a 14% increase in torque and 8% gain in horsepower over the current model’s V-6 diesel.
By comparison, the 3.0-liter inline-six diesel in General Motors Co.’s 2020 Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra pickups kicks out 277 hp and 460 lb-ft or torque. Ford Motor Co.’s F-150 3.0-liter diesel V-6 makes 250 hp and 440 lb-ft.
In addition to a higher top end, the Ram’s peak torque is available sooner (starting at 1,600 rpm). The new Ram also boasts best-in-class towing capacity of 12,560 lbs.
The V-6 EcoDiesel will be available in all trim levels and configurations of the 2020 Ram 1500. That includes the 1500 Classic, which rides on the previous generation truck chassis.
FCA says it made several changes to the 3.0-liter mill, revising the cylinder head intake ports, redesigning exhaust gas recirculation system and fitting a new water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry turbine. The engine also benefits from the use of aluminum pistons with thinner rings and a low-friction coating. These and other changes helped lower the engine’s compression ratio from 16.5:1 to 16:1.
Pricing and fuel economy figures will be announced later. The Ram 1500 is due in the fourth quarter.
