The Kroger Co. and Silicon Valley startup Nuro launched a pilot program for autonomous grocery delivery this week in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Customers can schedule orders for same- or next-day delivery to their homes for a flat fee of $6 from Fry’s Food Stores via a smartphone app.
Nuro initially will make the deliveries using specially equipped Toyota Prius hybrid cars. Later this year, the company will begin using its own driverless R1 pods, which are about the same length of a compact crossover vehicle but half the width.
The companies announced the partnership in June. But they didn’t disclose the pilot city or details about the program at the time.
