Magna/Innoviz Win Lidar Deal with BMW

Magna International Inc. and partner Innoviz Technologies Ltd. say they have won a contract with BMW AG to supply Innoviz’s solid-state lidar sensors on semi- and fully autonomous vehicles.
The companies provided no financial details or launch plans for the technology in future Bimmers. BMW previously has said it aims to introduce fully autonomous vehicles by 2021.
Magna has been working with Innoviz since the Israeli startup was launched in 2016 and now integrates the company’s lidar with its own ultrasonic, camera and radar sensor package. The Canadian supplier invested in Innoviz last September as part of a Series B funding round led by Aptiv plc (formerly part of Delphi Automotive).
Innoviz specializes in MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) solid-state lidar. Several other companies also are developing MEMS and other solid-state technologies that promise to greatly reduce costs and improve performance compared with today’s spinning lidar devices found in prototype autonomous vehicles.
Last month BMW and Toyota invested in Blackmore Sensors and Analytics Inc., a Montana-based lidar startup. Blackmore claims its lidar is the first in the industry to use a frequency-modulated continuous wave technology in place of short laser pulses.RELATED CONTENT
