The Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio, officially opened its SmartCenter for autonomous and connected vehicles today.

TRC says the 540-acre test center, which is located within the group’s existing site, is the largest independent proving ground for advanced mobility technologies in North America. Funding for the first phase of the project, totaling $45 million, was provided by various state agencies and Ohio State University.

Designed for use by all types of passenger and commercial vehicles, the site has more than 1.1 million sq-ft of pavement, including an urban course with reconfigurable intersections and roundabouts. One intersection spans 1.2 miles and six lanes, which TRC claims makes it the longest and widest connected and signalized test junction in the industry.

The site also is equipped with dedicated-short-range communications and high-speed wireless capabilities. Among the other amenities are a 10,000 sq-ft control building with garage and office space.
