Truckmaker AB Volvo has launched a pilot program in Gothenburg, Sweden, that uses repurposed batteries from electric buses to help power a new apartment complex.

Solar panels mounted on the roof of the apartment buildings capture energy, which is stored in 14 lithium-ion batteries that previously powered electric buses. The batteries are linked together to create a 200-kWh storage pack that can provide power for homeowners, or to store or sell surplus energy.

Volvo is partnering with Goteborg Energi, Riksbyggen housing and Johanneberg Science Park on the project. The program is partially funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 and Iris Smart Cities initiatives.
