Tesla Inc. has applied for a building permit in Fremont, Calif., the home of its sole assembly plant, that signals plans to add another production line at the facility.
The application is for “GA5 demo and rough grading,” in which GA means general assembly, according to Bloomberg News.
The Fremont plant currently makes Tesla’s all-electric Model X crossover vehicles and Model S and Model 3 sedans. Bloomberg says the company also is continuing to assemble Model 3s in an enormous tent it erected last year next to the main factory.
The complex is being prepared to add the Model Y, a midsize crossover based on the Model 3. Bloomberg says the factory is already becoming crowded, but it isn’t clear whether the building permit is related to Model Y output.
