Regulators in Thailand have drafted guidelines to legalize ride-hailing services in the country by March.

Such services are available in Thailand now. But police routinely stop and fine ride-hailing drivers because they are not registered taxi operators.

The Thai transport ministry tells Reuters that its aim is to provide the public with a legal option to taxi services without deliberately fostering more competition with such operators.

The proposed rules will require that privately owned vehicles used for ride-hailing be registered and equipped with a GPS. Operators will need a normal driver’s license. Companies that offer ride-hailing transportation must verify the identities of their drivers. They also will be required to operate a 24-hour customer complaint facility.
