Velodyne Lidar Inc. says its new Alpha Prime sensor for autonomous vehicles significantly outperforms its previous-generation lidar.

The company claims best-in-class perception, field-of-view, resolution, range and power efficiency.

This includes 360° surround view perception and 40° vertical field-of-view.

Alpha Prime can obtain reflectivity returns from more than 4.8 million points per second, which Velodyne says simplifies detection and tracking of multiple vehicles, pedestrians and other objects.

The new system also boasts improved efficiency over broad temperature and environmental conditions without the need for active cooling. Velodyne says Alpha Prime can detect dark or low reflectance objects at long distances (including low visibility pedestrians) as well as “negative perception” obstacles, such as potholes and cracks in the road.
