Volkswagen AG and Intel Corp. are launching a joint venture that will develop autonomous ride-hailing vehicles and services in Israel.

Dubbed “New Mobility in Israel,” the joint venture also will involve Intel’s Mobileye unit and Champion Motors, which is VW Group’s long-time distribution partner in the country. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

VW will provide electric vehicles for the partnership, while Champion will be responsible for fleet management and mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) deployment. Mobileye will provide software and hardware for Level 4 self-driving vehicles.

The partners plan to ramp up the joint venture early next year—starting with several dozen test vehicles—and are targeting commercial applications in 2022. The Israeli government has agreed to provide infrastructure and traffic data to support the program and will work with the partners on legal and regulatory hurdles.
