Volkswagen AG’s Electrify America LLC subsidiary is adding some 180 charging stations at Walmart Inc. stores in 12 more states.
Electrify America already has more than 120 charging stations operating at Walmart locations in 34 states. Media reports say as many as 180 new charging stations could be installed by year-end.
The focus will be on so-called “heartland states” in the middle of the country, after the initial EV infrastructure build-out on the east and west coasts. Electrify America notes that Walmart installations provide greater access to chargers near highways, rural communities and other routes that have had limited access to public charging stations.
The systems being installed feature 150-kW and 350-kW DC fast chargers. Such systems can provide EVs with as much as 20 miles of range per minute of charging.
Electrify was established in 2017 as part of a settlement stemming from VW’s diesel emission scandal. The company expects to have nearly 500 charging stations with more than 2,000 DC fast chargers in operation by the end of 2019.
