Dongfeng Special Vehicle Co. plans to deploy 500 fuel cell-powered trucks in Shanghai this year.
The 21-ft-long trucks, which can haul as much as 3.2 tons of goods, will use 30-kW fuel cell stacks developed by Canada’s Ballard Power Systems Inc. The systems are expected to provide a driving range of about 330 km (205 miles).
Shanghai Sinotran New Energy Automobile Operation Co. will operate the fleet and use the trucks for intra-city deliveries.
Ballard will produce the proton-exchange-membrane stacks through its Guangdong Synergy Ballard Hydrogen Power Co. joint venture plant in Yunfu. Shanghai Reinventing Fire Technology Co. will serve as the system integrator.
The program supports a 2017 initiative that calls for Shanghai to produce 3,000 fuel cell vehicles per year by 2020. Shanghai currently has two hydrogen refueling stations and is due to add two more this summer and as many as six more by 2020.
