General Motors Co. is developing a family of high-end electric SUVs and pickup trucks to produce at its assembly plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, sources tell Reuters.
The scheme also could revive the Hummer SUV brand that GM phased out 19 years ago, Reuters says. Bloomberg News cited sources in June who said GM was considering an all-electric Hummer SUV.
GM had intended to shut down the Detroit-Hamtramck facility at the end of this year. But last week it offered to keep the plant open and spend $3 billion to turn it into an electric truck factory.
The facility would handle GM’s “BT1” electric SUV and pickup truck program. Reuters says the plan aims to roll out its first model, a low-volume electric pickup under an unspecified brand, in 2021. The EV will be followed by three models in 2023: a pickup for GMC and two SUVs, one of them a Cadillac model.
